Volume 5 | Issue 3 | October 2010

Greetings from the Board

The PWP season has begun and we have already had two exciting programs at our monthly meetings. Anja Hitzenberger was our September speaker who shared her portraiture work with us and L2 gave us great insights into the history of image presentation and a wonderful overview of some of the current ways we have available for mounting, framing and preserving our photographs.

Membership this year is on the rise – we now are 192 women strong and welcome all of our new members. There are 37 of you that signed up since January (29 since July). Join us in working towards making this the best year yet for PWP.

35th ANNIVERSARY PWP INTERNATIONAL OPEN CALL
A HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

PWP’s first call for entry open to both members and non-members has been an overwhelming success.  It not only  raised money for the organization through entry fees, but also succeeded in building world wide awareness of the PWP brand.  Women from all across the United States submitted their images, as did women from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, England, France,  Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Turkey.  Hundreds of people have visited our website and we have at least twelve new members as a result of the call. Welcome to PWP!

Jurors Elinor Carucci and Stephen Perloff are hard at work selecting images for the group and online exhibitions. The twelve cash award-winning images will be featured in the next issue of PWP’s IMPRINTS magazine, to be published in January. Good Luck to all!

The next open call, CONTRASTS, will begin shortly, so keep an eye out for the announcement.

New York, New York 10007

PWP (Professional Women Photographers) and Scott M. Stringer, Office of Manhattan Borough President Gallery present an exhibition of photography that views commerce in ways that are evocative, unusual and often humorous.  Members of PWP, an organization of nearly 200 photojournalists, fine arts and commercial photographers, explore their personal visions of commerce with artistry, insight and fresh points of view.  Buyers and sellers, goods and services, motivations and emotions all play their roles in images illustrating the art and drama of commerce.

The exhibition will be on view to the public from October 4 through October 29, 2010.  Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM.

WEB

PWP AT A GLANCE

Check out the PWP Website for our new “PWP AT A GLANCE.” Catherine Kirkpatrick has put together a wonderful vehicle for telling the world about our organization.

And when you tell people about the organization refer them to PWP AT A GLANCE for a great overview of all that we do.

RECORD BREAKING WEBSITE VISITS

Our Development and outreach activities (including the 35th Anniversary Open Call) are paying off handsomely in terms of web exposure. We had over 4500 hits on the PWP website in September 2010 – a 50% increase over the same period in 2009. This means an amazing number of new people interested in PWP and women in photography are seeing our members’ work.

If you haven’t uploaded your images and created a profile yet, don’t put it off any longer. The PWP website is a huge benefit of membership – especially for those who use it to promote their images and photography websites. Take advantage of the individual web address you get and the keyword search criteria to add another dimension to how you promote your work.

MEMBER TO MEMBER WORKSHOPS

Last year PWP began offering Member to Member workshops again. It is a wonderful opportunity for our members to share/teach a specific skill to others in PWP. These are member taught and stand apart from the educational opportunities/classes/seminars PWP members get through Barbara Nelson.

If there is a photography related process or skill you are proficient in and would be willing to share, contact Ruth Gitto (rkgitto@yahoo.com) our Programs Director to organize a session. It could be an evening or a weekend day and would be one or two hours at most.

Those we have done in the past have been a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to get to better know fellow members in a small group.

REMINDER – RSVP FOR NEW MEMBER VOLUNTEER RECEPTION

Each year PWP welcomes it’s new members and honors those that step up to volunteer at a wonderful reception. Attendance is by invitation and we hold it at a west side restaurant with drinks and edibles. This is a reminder to those that received invitations from Sandy our Volunteer Director to RSVP ASAP.

This is a great evening and opportunity to welcome our new members and for them to meet those that make our organization work.

Terry Berenson and Patricia Gilman are heading the committee to create the event and have  Stephen Perloff and Elinor Carucci as jurors.  This is a great PWP activity and should be very exciting to work on. If you are interested please contact Terry at terry.berenson@gmail.com or Patricia at patriciagilman@gmail.com.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

This year our Community Service Committee partnered with Women In Need, Inc. (WIN), providing both photography and mentoring services for this non-profit organization. On Monday, June 7th, 2010, Women In Need will be holding its “Volunteers Providing Help and Hope” reception at Baruch College. The reception will honor all volunteers who have helped WIN throughout the year, including the members of PWP’s Community Service Committee. Photographs taken by CSC members will be on display.

Our Community Service Committee has partnered, over the past several years, with non profit organizations in New York City providing pro bono photographic services at events.  PWP CSC  provides the partner organization with an image library of its events as well as display prints for special exhibitions, galas and receptions.  PWP gives back to the community and our members gain experience in doing event photography while having their work displayed at these events.

In addition, the CSC has started a small mentoring program using photography as a way of introducing the art form and means of expression to needy children.  If you would like to join PWP in this great committee please contact Karen Smul at outreach@pwponline.org

2010 – 2011 MONTHLY MEETINGS

SAME TIME – SAME PLACE

The PWP Monthly meeting will be held next year on the first Wednesday of the month at St. Paul’s Church on West 59th Street, as we have done this year.

PLEASE NOTE – because the first Wednesday in September is before Labor day and the second is in conflict with the Jewish Holidays our September meeting will be WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 15, 2010

We plan another exciting year of guest lecturers and programs so please mark your calendars and make the PWP meeting a priority.

CURTAIN RAISERS

Each month the PWP meeting opens with a curtain raiser – a PWP member who has the opportunity to show 10 images to the group.  It is a lot of fun and a great way to get your images “out there” with our members and guests as the audience. Our Program Director Ruth Gitto is looking for member curtain raisers for the months of October, November, February and March.  Contact Ruth at programs@pwponline.org
