Volume 5 | Issue 3 | October 2010

Greetings from the Board

The PWP season has begun and we have already had two exciting programs at our monthly meetings. Anja Hitzenberger was our September speaker who shared her portraiture work with us and L2 gave us great insights into the history of image presentation and a wonderful overview of some of the current ways we have available for mounting, framing and preserving our photographs.

Membership this year is on the rise – we now are 192 women strong and welcome all of our new members. There are 37 of you that signed up since January (29 since July). Join us in working towards making this the best year yet for PWP.

35th ANNIVERSARY PWP INTERNATIONAL OPEN CALL
A HUGE SUCCESS!!!!

PWP’s first call for entry open to both members and non-members has been an overwhelming success.  It not only  raised money for the organization through entry fees, but also succeeded in building world wide awareness of the PWP brand.  Women from all across the United States submitted their images, as did women from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, England, France,  Hungary, Iceland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Lebanon, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Turkey.  Hundreds of people have visited our website and we have at least twelve new members as a result of the call. Welcome to PWP!

Jurors Elinor Carucci and Stephen Perloff are hard at work selecting images for the group and online exhibitions. The twelve cash award-winning images will be featured in the next issue of PWP’s IMPRINTS magazine, to be published in January. Good Luck to all!

The next open call, CONTRASTS, will begin shortly, so keep an eye out for the announcement.

PWP (Professional Women Photographers) and Scott M. Stringer, Office of Manhattan Borough President Gallery present an exhibition of photography that views commerce in ways that are evocative, unusual and often humorous.  Members of PWP, an organization of nearly 200 photojournalists, fine arts and commercial photographers, explore their personal visions of commerce with artistry, insight and fresh points of view.  Buyers and sellers, goods and services, motivations and emotions all play their roles in images illustrating the art and drama of commerce.

The exhibition will be on view to the public from October 4 through October 29, 2010.  Hours are Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 4 PM.

The first tour is tentatively scheduled for October 9th -16th, and the second tour is tentatively scheduled for October 30th – November 6th. RECORD BREAKING WEBSITE VISITS

Our Development and outreach activities (including the 35th Anniversary Open Call) are paying off handsomely in terms of web exposure. We had over 4500 hits on the PWP website in September 2010 – a 50% increase over the same period in 2009. This means an amazing number of new people interested in PWP and women in photography are seeing our members’ work.

If you haven’t uploaded your images and created a profile yet, don’t put it off any longer. The PWP website is a huge benefit of membership – especially for those who use it to promote their images and photography websites. Take advantage of the individual web address you get and the keyword search criteria to add another dimension to how you promote your work.

MEMBER TO MEMBER WORKSHOPS

Last year PWP began offering Member to Member workshops again. It is a wonderful opportunity for our members to share/teach a specific skill to others in PWP. These are member taught and stand apart from the educational opportunities/classes/seminars PWP members get through Barbara Nelson.

If there is a photography related process or skill you are proficient in and would be willing to share, contact Ruth Gitto (rkgitto@yahoo.com) our Programs Director to organize a session. It could be an evening or a weekend day and would be one or two hours at most.

Those we have done in the past have been a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to get to better know fellow members in a small group.

REMINDER – RSVP FOR NEW MEMBER VOLUNTEER RECEPTION

Each year PWP welcomes it’s new members and honors those that step up to volunteer at a wonderful reception. Attendance is by invitation and we hold it at a west side restaurant with drinks and edibles. This is a reminder to those that received invitations from Sandy our Volunteer Director to RSVP ASAP.

This is a great evening and opportunity to welcome our new members and for them to meet those that make our organization work.
