Sources & Choices: Etty Yaniv
Today photography is more than a beautiful single image. In its series Sources & Choices, PWP speaks with artists who are incorporating photographs into their work in unique and personal ways. Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, Etty Yaniv holds BA in Psychology and English Literature from Tel Aviv University, a BFA from Parsons School of Design, and an MFA from SUNY Purchase. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, Village Voice, Newsday Magazine and The Nation, and been exhibited internationally at many galleries and museums including the Haifa Museum of Art, the Newark Museum of Art, the Torrance Art Museum, Purdue University, and Leipziger Baumwollspinnerie, Halle 14, in Leipzig Germany. In Memoriam: Sally Minker
PWP is sad to announce the passing of member Sally Minker. Sally was a fine artist and graphic designer who shared her abundant talent with the organization by putting together publicity materials for shows and exhibiting her work. Most of all, she was a warm and encouraging member, a friend to many, a funny and gracious presence at meetings and events. Sally received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, and her MFA from the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia. She won grants and awards from the Artists Space in New York City, the Connemara Conservancy in Dallas, and the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Art and Culture in Baltimore. In Memoriam: Ann Littlejohn
Professional Women Photographers notes with sadness the passing of longtime member Ann Littlejohn. Ann was a active participant in PWP meetings, classes, and events, where she was friendly and helpful to all, one of the great members who make the organization tick. Ann wasn’t partial to a single element of PWP, but supported the organization as a whole. A few years back when I was on the board, I arrived very late to the Student Awards ceremony. As I snuck in, she was the first person I met. But there was no shaming, only a warm greeting, and the moment and its grace stayed with me. WOMEN: New Portraits by Annie Leibovitz
Recently I was fortunate to have the opportunity to view Annie Leibovitz’s WOMEN: New Portraits exhibit. The NYC show was on display in the former Bayview Correctional Facility, the future home of The Women’s Building on the West Side Highway and 20th Street. I could have sat for hours watching the four wall size projection screens displaying images of women from all corners of the world which the photographer began shooting in 1999. The adjacent reading room was a photographer’s dream, containing nearly every book one would want in a photo library. Surfaces and Beyond: A Visit With Isabelle Schneider
As photography has changed in recent years, so have the artists working in the discipline. They have adapted to new technology, borrowed ideas and materials from other arts, sometimes producing unusual results. Isabelle Schneider is one of these creatives, bringing to her work a strong aesthetic that transcends various methods, materials, and labels. Originally from Northeastern Pennsylvania, Schneider enrolled at FIT/Parsons, creating her own course of study in fashion design, and became interested in photography thinking it would be striking on fabric.
