Inside the Collector’s Mind: What Every Photographer Needs to Know With Alice Zimet

alice4Alice S. Zimet began collecting photography in 1985, and her collection of roughly 200 images features both 20th Century and contemporary masters. She is a member of the Collections Committee of the Harvard Art Museum, sits on the board of the Magnum Foundation, and is a member of the International Center of Photography’s (ICP) Acquisitions Committee.

Zimet is also a gifted teacher who understands the many facets of the photographic field. This seminar is specially designed for photographers who would like to learn more about how collectors think, buy and build their collections. It will also be of interest to photographers who show or would like to show with a gallery, as it relates to how dealers work with collectors. While it will not focus on how to find a dealer, or how dealers work with photographers, there will be a great deal of useful background information on a side of the field most artists are not familiar with.

There will be four sessions:
(1) classroom presentation which covers how collectors determine what and where to buy, pricing issues, auction vs. gallery sales, not-for-profit vs. for-profit resources and much more;
(2) visit to an auction preview (with an assignment due on site);
(3) behind-the-scene visits to midtown photography galleries;
(4) cocktails / visit to the leader’s home to see her collection and continue our discussions with ‘host dealers’ and other special guests.

This fact-filled seminar is perfect for those photographers looking to understand the dynamics of the photography marketplace, and provides the perspective of a long-standing collector, well respected in the field.
