Greetings from the Board
This newsletter comes to you with a note of sadness. Long time PWP member Shoshana Rothaizer passed away last week after a long battle with cancer. Shoshana joined PWP in 1985 and over the last 25 years contributed so much to PWP, while also touching many, many people in her work and her personal life. She introduced KUDOS to PWP, providing our membership a place to post their individual achievements in the world of photography.
As KUDOS grew from a single sheet to a multi-page, single-spaced record, it became the barometer of our members’ professional growth. Shoshana continued with KUDOS despite her illness which inspired so many of us. In 2009, Shoshana received the first PWP Volunteer of the Year Award, an honor she so well deserved. We will miss her bright smile and sense of humor at our meetings, but her legacy of volunteer service will always remain as an integral part of PWP.

Time is running out!!!! February 28 is the deadline to submit to CONTRASTS, PWP’s second international open call. Submissions from the general public have not been as strong as the 35th Anniversary Open Call – a possible plus for submitting PWP members who will have a greater chance for cash prizes and inclusion in the exhibition at SohoPhoto Gallery.
CONTRASTS is a wide-open theme that photographers can interpret many many ways. Examples are Black versus White, color contrasts, old/young, modern/vintage, soft/hard, male/female, urban/rural, etc. etc. etc.

Thanks to everyone who submitted entries for the next Imprints Cover – the publications committee met and selected an image by Leslie Granda-Hill to be featured on the cover of the next issue. Also, our wonderful magazine has a very widespread circulation – across the country and around the world.

“Beam me up, Scotty” is one of the most famous catch phrases to make its way into pop culture
in the last fifty years. While on occasion most of us would like to be able to be transported instantly, our technology has not quite evolved to the point where our bodies can be disassembled in one place and reassembled in another in any amount of time. However, since the invention of the wheel, attributed to the Mesopotamians, circa 3500 BC, humans have invented all kinds of ingenious vehicles to move themselves and their cargo from point A to point B. Let’s see those trains, planes, automobiles, motorcycles, ships, sailboats, submarines, rockets, elephants, horses, any beasts of burden (including humans), wheelbarrows, tractors, baby buggies, roller skates, pogo sticks, skis, roads, trails, highways, bridges, trucks, bicycles, – anything and everything that takes you from here to there, including any “teleportation” devices should you happen to find one!

We have received many submissions and this will be an exciting event from the perspective of seeing what young women are photographing these days as well as the talent they exhibit and the excitement generated by their friends and families.
The Student Awards reception is also our annual auction fundraiser. We are looking for items for the auction table that are new or near new and can be photo related or not. Please contact Andy Mars at AMarsPhoto@aol.com with offers.

Getting Organized: How to Find Those Digital Images A shoe box or file drawer no longer suffices to organize, file and find digital images. If you
have a proper “system”, using some of the great software available today, you will (should) be able to find and easily see any of your digital (or scanned film) images in ten seconds. Using live demonstrations, Lester will outline the concepts and workflow of a digital filing system, and then show a step-by-step process from camera click to an easily searchable library using keywords. He will discuss the pros and cons of various storage media (discs, hard drives, RAID arrays), and the importance of backup. Though his workflow is appropriate for many brands of archiving software, his demonstrations will be in Extensis Portfolio, and Adobe Lightroom and Bridge (Photoshop comes with Bridge). You will also painfully learn the importance of the acronym GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out.
Lester Lefkowitz‘s BIO Lester Lefkowitz has over twenty-five years experience as a professional photographer. He has been a major producer of stock photography for both Getty and Corbis, and his assignment clients include many Fortune-500 companies. Lester is a frequent lecturer and workshop leader at the International Center of Photography (ICP). He has photographed in all fifty states and in nine countries, and has taught photography workshops in Venice and Antarctica. Beyond Stills: An Introduction to HDSLR Still and Motion Capture for the Working Photographer

DETAILS: When the “H” was placed in front of “DSLR”, it sent the imaging world into a tailspin: Photographers as videographers, videographers as photographers, economical equipment for aspiring filmmakers, and a multi-million dollar accessory market that addresses some of the camera shortcomings and offers items to enhance the motion capture experience. As more and more HDSLRs become available, as the popularity of video properties like YouTube continue to grow, as the market penetration of smart phones and tablets continues, and as video advertisements grow in popularity and importance, more and more working photographers have been asking whether they need to add motion capability to their available services.
In making the decision to add HDSLR video as a service, photographers should understand what’s involved from pre- to post capture, because it is not as easy or seamless as the camera manufacturer’s ads suggest. This seminar can help make HDSLR motion capture a more realistic service for you to offer. Some accessories– including stabilizers, lighting, LCD aids, and sound equipment– will be on display. Questions are welcome during the presentation. The seminar will also include HDSLR video work for illustrative purposes. Presenter Byron Atkinson shoots editorial, fashion, portraiture and stock images as well as teaches workshops on various aspects of still and motion capture. He is the author of the e-Book “Beyond Stills: HDSLR Motion Capture for the Non-Filmmaker” which is available at www.beyondstills.com and through iBooks. Based in New York, Byron has been incorporating HD video in his work since the arrival of the Nikon D90 and Canon 5D MarkII in 2008 and began writing about the various aspects of still and motion capture. He shoots with several camera brands. He maintains the photography and HDSLR-related blogs www.hdhd411.com and www.hdslrs-n-motion.com.

Just a note about our workshops and seminars. Each opportunity is tailored for the PWP membership (none “out of the can”) with leading experts in the field who are both experienced teachers and successful photographers. Additionally, every effort is made to keep overhead down so that members can have this benefit at an affordable cost. We depend on member participation to keep back office volunteer work at a minimum with timely reservations and payment. The process has been simplified as well with Email announcements and an RSVP link with fee payment instructions.

On June 5, 2011, from 2:30 to 5PM, PWP will be sponsoring a Photography Boat Trip around Manhattan Island. The focus will be the architecture of Manhattan as seen from the water and our guide will be a certified AIA architect. The excursion will be limited to 55 guests. The cost will be $95 per person and will include light refreshments. Specifics and sign-up information will be sent in early May, but please mark your calendars to hold the date.
