Breadth of Vision at FIT

In 1975 an historic exhibition called Breadth of Vision: Portfolios of Women Photographers was held at the Fashion Institute of Technology. It galvanized some of the exhibitors to begin meeting to share information, stories and work-in-progress. At the time,  photography was male-dominated, and there was a need for women to come together to support each other and create opportunities for themselves.

In the early 1980s, the group became a formal non-profit entity and was officially named Professional Women Photographers. It developed a format of monthly meetings featuring a guest photographer, began holding exhibitions and put out its first publication, PWP Times.
