Believing Is Seeing: Observations on the Mysteries of Photography

by Errol Morris

Academy Award–winning director Errol Morris turns his eye to the nature of truth in photography. With his keen sense of irony, skepticism, and humor, Morris shows how photographs can obscure as much as they reveal, and how what we see is often determined by our beliefs. Each essay in this book is part detective story, part philosophical meditation, presenting readers with a conundrum, and investigates the relationship between photographs and the real world they supposedly record. Recommendedby Joshua Lutz (artist and instructor at ICP) who teaches a class at Purchase College based on this book.

Chapter 1 is called “Crimean War Essay (Intentions of the Photographer) – Which Came First, the Chicken or the Egg? (Parts 1, 2, and 3)”. It is almost 70 pages long and includes lots of photographs.

The PWP Book Club will meet at the Metropolitan Opera Guild on March 6th, April 10th, and May 1st at 5 pm (just prior to our monthly meetings). Click here for detailed map of meeting location.
