Event Recap: Visit to the Metropolitan Museum of Art Photograph Conservation Department

On May 5th, twenty PWP members were given a behind the scenes talk from Nora Kennedy, Conservator in Charge of the Photograph Conservation Department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, part of the Sherman Fairchild Center for Works on Paper and Photograph Conservation. Thanks to Michelle Dragonetti for arranging the tour, which was a popular event with PWP member in the past.

For over two hours, we were treated to Ms. Kennedy discussing the medium’s history with examples of different photo processes from the Met’s extensive collection. She went into detail about the methods and materials used to create photographs from hand-coating selected papers with light sensitive mixtures to understanding the basics on how to read a photograph.

The Met’s Photograph Conservation Department is active in many areas including education, lectures for groups, students, and the general public. The Met Photo Conservation Department can be followed on Instagram @metphotoconservation
