Event Recap: The Urbanscape at Twilight - Workshop

Photography Workshop: The Urbanscape at Twilight: July 27 – 29.

Instructor, Kay Kenny, (photography teacher NYU and ICP)

This 8 hour workshop is designed to introduce the student to photographing the urban landscape under lowlight conditions. At twilight, the rhythm of the city abruptly changes. Movement becomes a central theme as time becomes compressed through the slower speed of the shutter. Students explore this moment of light and shadow and learn to observe the nuances of contrasts and change from daylight to dusk.

Day 1: The class will meet for 2.5 hours of technical information including using ISO ranges from high to low, neutral density filters, slow shutter speeds, and white balance choices under urban ambient light conditions. Equipment such as tripods, shutter release mechanisms and portable lighting devices such as flashlights, shoe flashes and video lights will be discussed. If time permits, we will venture out to the 8th Avenue area to begin applying the information from class. Written handouts will be available.

Day 2: the class will meet in Dumbo for 3 hours for the hands-on experience of photographing the NYC twilight.

Day 3: The students will bring their images to class for 2.5 hours of discussion and critique in a supportive environment.

**A tripod and a digital or film SLR camera that can be set to manual controls are required for this course.

Maximum number: 12. Students will meet in a studio on W. 36th Street the first and third evenings from 6:00 pm to 8:30. In Dumbo students will meet at a designated spot at 6 pm for the 3 hour shoot.
