I have always had a camera, a paint brush or a pencil in my hand, making something out of nothing. My current journey with a camera started in 2009 after a sudden and devastating loss. My way back into the world began with a DSLR camera and a long lens with which to photograph birds. Photography got me out of the house, out of my head, and into the healing world of nature, a place as necessary to me as breathing. As a city dweller, it saddens me to see so many human beings so disconnected from the natural world, so unaware of what’s around them, even in the heart of the city. We are part of nature and yet there is a striving to disassociate from it and fill the earth with manmade artifacts (and the accumulated waste from those efforts). Although I believe it is important to document what is happening with the environment, I am not a documentarian. I prefer to idealize what I see – to accentuate the beauty of a transient moment and figuratively stop time. I admire the clean, dramatic lines of artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe as well as the ethereal effects of in-camera creative blurs and long exposures, and often combine these techniques in my images. My Ice project makes use of long exposures, creating a smooth water background for the ice jewels that I am drawn to. The ephemeral quality of ice, the temporary beauty, is what I aim to bring to the viewer as a work of art.
