Jill Freedman, Hooked on Photography
January 5, 2006
I remember the day I woke up and wanted a camera. As soon as I held it in my hands it felt good. I never had the sense of holding a machine. I read the instructions, went out into the street, shot two rolls, and was astonished with the results. It were as though I had been taking pictures for years, but in my head, without a camera. "That's it," I said. "I'm a photographer." What a relief. At last! Something I wanted to do.
Jill Freedman's imagery and essays reflect her individual vision while inviting a viewer in to share universal emotions and experiences. She is included in the photo collections of eighteen museums, has had forty solo exhibits and received eight prestigious awards including a National Endowment for the Arts, Photography Fellowship in 1973.
Ms. Freedman's seventh book, "Ireland Ever," published by Abrams is in bookstores now and available online.
