The group recently completed its first year of volunteer photography work, choosing University Settlement as their first partner. Almost 3,000 of their images of the vibrant Lower East Side immigrant community have been added to University Settlement’s photo archive for use on their website, annual report, and other promotional materials. This yearlong partnership has culminated in a photo exhibition, University Settlement: A Year in Pictures, at the Houston Street Center, NYC from 5/9 — 6/12. == Phyllis J. Helen Bohmart Pine and her husband Chuck Pine presented Above the Arctic Circle - Norway and Finland, a digital slide show, at two venues: Tuesday Evening Hour, NYC on 4/15 and the Appalachian Mountain Club, NYC on 4/24. == Irma Bohórquez-Geisler is one of eight visual artists who were selected to receive the Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island 2008 Excellence in Exhibiting Arts Award. Irma will have an exhibit of her on-going photo-documentary essay on the Mexican immigrant community. == Paula Botstein is a finalist in the American category of Smithsonian Magazine’s 2008 annual photo contest — votes are presently being tabulated. == A public art mural by Susan Bowen, showing a photo-montage of historical photographs celebrating the labor movement in New Haven, was installed on 4/14 at Troup Middle School in New Haven, CT. Installation shots can be viewed at http://www.susanbowenphoto.com/pages/Public%20Art/New%20Haven%20Installation.htm. The project was one and 3/4 years in the making, and the resulting artwork is porcelain enamel on steel, comprising twelve 4-foot wide panels with an overall size of 5'3" x 48'. An official dedication ceremony will take place in the fall. == A photograph by Ann Brandeis, a member of the Society for Photographic Education (SPE), was chosen for the photography show at SPE’s 45th National Conference, 3/13-16, in Denver, CO. Of the thousands of images that were submitted, fifty were chosen, and just ten of them were displayed in SPE’s convention gallery. == On 4/28, Silvianna Goldsmith’s 1975 film, “Nightclub, Memories of Havana in Queens,” was shown at Collective Unconscious, NYC. == An image by Leslie Granda-Hill was chosen for the Moore at Kew autumn showcase photography competition at Kew Gardens in London. The winning images will be used for posters, brochures, etc. == Nine photographs by Dianora Niccolini were selected by the Library of Congress in December. An additional nine photographs were acquired by the Carlos Museum of Emory University in Atlanta, GA on 4/8. == On 3/26, Roz Rosenblum presented “The Art of Seeing” at Nassau Camera Club in Westbury, NY and on 2/13, she participated in a forum, “What judges look for,” at the Princeton Photo Club in Princeton, NJ. Roz judged photo contests on 4/5 at the New York Botanical/Zoological Photo Society, and on 4/30 at the Cranbury (NJ) Digital Camera Club. Several of Ruth’s digital color prints from the book were exhibited at Soho Photo Gallery in December. == A photograph by Holly Gordon was on the cover of the February/March issue of Creations Magazine, a Long Island publication. == Freda Leinwand’s photograph of an angry driver will be in the fourth edition of Interpersonal Communications, a textbook by Canary, Cody and Manusov, to be published by Bedford/St. Martin’s in 2008. == Daryl-Ann Saunders was commissioned to photograph a Microsoft Corporation top woman executive, and this image was published in an advertorial in the 3/31 issue of Crain’s Magazine. == Shelley Seccombe’s book, Lost Waterfront, containing Shelley’s long-term series on the Greenwich Village waterfront, was on the Spring list from Fordham University Press, co-published by Friends of Hudson River Park. A one-day show and book launch party took place at Westbeth Gallery, NYC on 2/28, and on 4/28, Shelley participated in Authors’ Night at The Nightingale-Bamford School, NYC, where several other noted authors were in attendance to autograph copies of their books. == Catherine Steinmann is co-author of Vanishing Tibet, recently published by Overlook Press. In his foreword, Robert A.F. Thurman, President of Tibet House U.S., describes the book as “a labor of love, deep perception, and artistic excellence!” == A photo by Cindy Walpole was chosen by NANPA (North American Nature Photography Association) for their up-coming print journal Expressions. Over four thousand images were submitted, and Cindy’s photo was one of only 100 chosen for publication.
