For more than a century, New York was the greatest port in the country, but by the 1960s the bustling commercial waterfront was disappearing. After the West Side Highway was closed in 1973, many of the abandoned piers burned, while others collapsed into the river. By the 1990s, only ghosts were left. Shelley Seccombe's photographs document this period of transition and the ongoing renewal of the Greenwich Village waterfront.
