Story Behind the Shot

Photograph and Story by PWP Member Claudia Schellenberg

On the day I made this photo, we visited several workshops in villages outside of Cuenca in Ecuador, where people create and sell their crafts. The young woman pictured forms tiny figures from clay. She paints them when dry and adds props to create miniature scenes from daily life.

I was particularly impressed by her intensity and concentration as she worked on a man for one of her street scenes. My favorite scene on her shelf was a woman selling flowers, complete with miniature blossoms from paper.

I couldn’t resist the purchase, and her work, which you see here, now sits on my shelf at home.
