These are very exciting times for PWP.  We are now 200 women strong and growing. The organization is well on its way to fiscal strength and we have just produced our first successful Open Call for Entry that celebrated our 35th Anniversary.

How we have grown, from the ideas and ideals of a few women who saw a need to help level the playing field for women photographers, to the robust organization we are now, with internal support systems, networking, workshops, a full program of lectures, a magazine, exhibition opportunities, and state of the art web site.

To those of you that are new to the newsletter as a result of entering our open call – welcome.  We hope you are intrigued enough by what you read to join us.  It is easy and there is so much to be gained.

The Board

Note – We are experiencing some issues with spacing in a couple of the articles. Please bear with us as we get the technical side of producing the Newsletter worked out.

NEW CALL FOR ENTRY:

Perspectives on Time

The Callahan Gallery at St. Francis College
March 2nd – March 31st, 2011
Opening Reception: Wednesday, March 9th, 6:30PM-8:00PM

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 30th, 2010 @ 11:00PM

THEME:
How do you convey the passing of time in a day, in a year, in a life? To name but a few examples: awareness comes as day turns to night, as summer turns to fall, fashions change and people mature.  Time stamps its impressions on people as well as everything from tarnished silver to rusting metal and petrified wood.  History is recorded by the ticking of clocks, treasured antiques, and landmark buildings. Any of these and more qualify as “Perspectives in Time”. It’s your perspective that counts.
Some people my indicate the visual evidence of time in a photo sequence. For example, you may choose to create a triptych or even a series of up to six photos in one frame that convey the passage of time. It’s your call.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
MENTORING PROGRAM

@ 2010 Catherine Kirkpatrick - PWP November eNewsletter

@ 2010 Catherine Kirkpatrick

During 2009-2010 PWP worked with Women in Need (WIN), providing pro bono photographic, services to a non profit organization that truly supports women. As an expansion of our Community Service program, PWP has launched an on-going mentoring program at the Jennie Clarke Residences, a facility run  by WIN to provide short term housing for formerly homeless families.  The mentoring program opens doors to new possibilities to the residents at Jennie Clark. A major part of each session features PWP photographers teaching basic photography skills to children and teens at the Residence and accompanying participants on a photo walk in the neighborhood. At the conclusion of each session images are downloaded so students can immediately see their work.
PWP members who took part in a pilot session last spring had a wonderful, meaningful experience and enjoyed the day as much, if not more, than the kids!

The first of this year’s mentoring sessions took place on November 2nd. Some of the terrific images created by the children are included below.

NEW BLOG – VOLUNTEERING

Check out the PWP Website for our new blog about the 2010 PWP Volunteer of the year, Barbara Nelson, and the value of volunteering in the organization.  To access the article directly go to http://www.pwponline.org/blog/ . While you are there, check out all of our blog articles.  Many thanks to the talented members who took the time to write them.

MEMBER TO MEMBER WORKSHOPS

Last year PWP began offering Member to Member workshops again. It is a wonderful opportunity for our members to share/teach a specific skill to others in PWP.  These are member taught and stand apart from the educational opportunities/classes/seminars PWP members get through Barbara Nelson.

If there is a photography related process or skill you are proficient in and would be willing to share, contact Ruth Gitto (rkgitto@yahoo.com) our Programs Director to organize a session.  It could be an evening or a weekend day and would be one or two hours at most.

Those we have done in the past have been a lot of fun, and it’s a great way to get to better know fellow members in a small group.
