Greetings from the Board

Spring is upon us and we look forward to summer and all the photographic opportunities that accompany it. PWP is gearing up for its annual meeting and the year – end show and tell. The board is already looking towards next year with some new directors and great new plans for fund raising and expanded PWP activities.

Keep posted on this newsletter and E groups for announcements, join the fun and successes through volunteering, and enjoy the warm weather.

PWP’s latest exhibition, Americana, is currently on view at the MH Art & Framing Gallery, 9 West 20th St., through May 22nd.

Americana is an impressive show not only for the quality of the photography, but for the rich stories present in each image.  In an effort to explore these stories further, we are introducing a new feature on the blog called “What They Saw,” in which we will select images from current PWP exhibitions and publish the story behind the image, in the photographer’s own words.  We kick off this series with Joan Katz’s Brooklyn Powwow.  We also explore the beginnings of the exhibit and why the topic felt so relevant to the Americana committee.

As always, the Exhibitions Committee is looking for PWP members interested in launching future juried exhibitions for our members. It is a great way to learn about jurying and curating as well as forging great friendships within the organization. Contact Katie Mantell if you are interested

Our May Monthly Meeting will be held Wednesday May 5, 2010  at

The Church of St. Paul the Apostle
405 West 59th Street
(second floor)
New York NY 10019
6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

Our speaker in May will be PWP Member Barbara Koppelman and the curtain raiser will be our Community Service committee.

Barbara Koppelman is a photo editor, archivist and researcher who will provide an informational and instructional session on what makes a photograph sell. Barbara will share insights gained from experience as a photographers rep and consultant using successful images as illustrative examples.

Barbara has a successful career as an editor and consultant to photographers who has worked with many of our members. She provides one on one sessions with photographers to edit, organize and  help market their work as well as upgrade their business practices. She has worked with photographers in exploring fresh directions for their careers, evaluating or building their websites and finding stock agencies.

Barbara also has her own successful photography career providing editing and publishing services for many venues. A brief list includes “Radio City Music Hall, A Legend Is Reborn”, “Pop Culture, 100 Stories from Pepsi’s First 100 Years” for the Pepsi Cola Company, “To Give Them Light” Photographs of Roman Vishniac, “From Alice to Ocean” photographs by Rick Smolan, “Parabola, The Journal of Myth & Tradition”. With that and special editing and archivist projects for prominent photographers (and supervising the creation of the slide library at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston) the list is impressive.

We look forward to seeing you at both wonderful presentations. Bring friends and fellow photographers – remember our guest fee is only $10.

Come at 6 and enjoy the snacks we have for sale as well as a half hour to connect with other PWP members.

Beginning next month look for the TAMRON logo and website at the header of this newsletter each month. We are very excited about this new partnership with a premier lense manufacturer and encourage all members to support our advertisers and sponsors. TAMRON has been a vital supporter or PWP in the past through donations of lenses for our silent auctions and we look forward to a long and mutually profitably relationship with them.

For 2010 – 2011 TD BANK will be our sponsor for the PWP monthly meetings helping to defray the cost of meeting space and speaker honorariums. We look forward to proudly displaying their sign and logo at our sign in table each month and encourage all members to consider TD bank for their banking needs. TD is also a vital supporter of PWP having provided a wonderful space at its 74th Street and Broadway branch for our annual New Member Exhibit this year and last. We look forward to a great working relationship with TD bank as well.

From the Archives!

From the Archives is our new blog dedicated to the experience of women in photography from the 70′s on. These were the years in which PWP emerged and developed, when a large number of women were breaking into the photographic field.  It’s also the time when women’s roles were changing, and photography itself was moving into the digital age. It is going to be colorful, informative and fun.  It will draw on PWP archival material, but also take a look at the times as seen through the eyes of women photographers.
