Esther Babb is participating in The Self Portrait Project, a one-day exhibition of artists from around the world, at the Brooklyn Art Library on 4/23. A book will be published documenting the project.

Irma Bohórquez-Geisler has a solo show, MEXICANation, at Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island from 4/6-30. The show is in conjunction with Immigrant Heritage Week, a citywide celebration that honors the experiences and contributions of immigrants in New York City with free or low-cost programs that build cross-cultural understanding between New Yorkers.

The Landscape of Memory, a solo exhibition of over twenty-five pieces from Ann Brandeis‘s series of the same name, will be exhibited at the Gallery of the Riverhead Free Library in Riverhead, NY from 4/4-5/31.

Marilyn Fish-Glynn has a solo show, Elders, at Soho Photo Gallery, NYC from 5/4-29. Also the guest photographer at the gallery in May is former PWP member and speaker, Rebecca Lepkoff, who has demonstrated how to grow old with verve!

Two films which Silvianna Goldsmith made of Lil Picard are on display during the run of the show Lil Picard and the Counterculture, New York, which is at Grey Art Gallery, NYC from 4/20-7/10.

Holly Gordon‘s solo exhibition, Antarctica: Journey to the Extreme, is at Fotofoto Gallery in Huntington, NY from 4/9-5/16. This show first debuted at the New York Hall of Science in 2006.

Theresa King curated Moment to Moment – Consistency and Change, a four-person show at Westbeth Gallery, NYC, in which she will show forty-two photographs. The exhibition runs from 4/10-5/2.

Susan Ledwith has several photos in Vernal Variations, an exhibition sponsored by the Staten Island Creative Community, at Art at Bay in Staten Island from 4/2-25.

Roz Rosenblum is presenting a lecture, “The Art of Seeing€ at the Vailsburg Camera Club in Springfield, NJ on 4/8, and she’ll present “Australia/New Zealand€ to the Photographers of Sussex County in Augusta, NJ on 4/19.

On 4/12, Lynn Saville is giving a lecture, “Night/Shift,€ co-sponsored by the Center for Architecture and Neighborhood Preservation Center, NYC. A book-signing will follow.

Sandra Gottlieb has a solo show, Images of the Sea, at the Alden B. Dow Museum of Science & Art, 1801 West St. Andrews, in Midland, MI 48640 from 1/23-4/25. Call 989-631-5930. The exhibit consists of thirty large pieces (up to 50″) in two rooms, as part of a large exhibition relating to water called “WaterWorks.€

Mary Heller has a solo exhibition, Fine Art Photography, at Sunita’s Bar, 106 Norfolk Street (between Rivington and Delancy Streets), NYC from 2/25-4/25.

Theresa King has a solo show, The Last Day of the Myrtle Avenue El, at the New York Transit Museum, Boerum Place and Schermerhorn Street, Brooklyn Heights. The exhibition opened 9/29, and has recently been extended through July because of popular demand.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Trish Mayo has two photographs in Women in the Heights, Contemporary Women Artists of Northern Manhattan, at the NoMAA (Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance) Gallery, 178 Bennett Avenue at 189th Street, 3rd Floor, NYC from 3/4-4/2. Call 212-568-4396.

Laurie Rhodes has work in an international documentary photography exhibition, Building an Ethical Economy: Theology and the Marketplace, at the Trinity Church Museum, Broadway at Wall Street, NYC from 1/25-4/5. The show is in conjunction with Trinity Institute’s annual theological conference of the same name.

Recent Exhibitions

Photographs by Paula Berg and Janice Wood Wetzel were selected for inclusion in the online gallery for the Floral exhibit at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, VT from 2/9-3/6, and images by Sandy Alpert and Diane Smook were displayed on the gallery’s walls. Also, the images of all four women were included in the exhibit catalogue, published by Blurb Books.

Sheila Bernard had work in The Subject is Red, at Soho Photo, NYC from 2/2-27.

Ann Brandeis had work in Artists, at Hampton Road Gallery in Southampton, NY from 2/13-3/7. Katherine Criss and Holly Gordon participated in Artist’s Choice and Chosen Artists, at b.j. spoke gallery in Huntington, NY from 2/2-25.

A solo exhibition of Elisa Decker‘s photographs, Portraits, was at the Gallery of the Office of the Manhattan Borough President, NYC from 3/3-26.

Photographs of Iceland by Patricia Gilman were in the window of Ritz Camera, NYC during the month of March.

Holly Gordon participated in The Short Show, at Fotofoto Galley, Huntington, NY from 1/29-2/21.

An image by Sandra Gottlieb was included in Click, an invitational photography show at Glave Kocen Gallery in Richmond, VA from 2/5-27.

Myrna Harrison-Changar showed photography and art in Winter “Art€ Expressions, with the National League of American Pen Women, at St. Francis College, Brooklyn, from 2/1-26.

Myrna Harrison-Changar, Lore Behrendt and Diane Hardy Waller had work in Expressions: 2010, at Lafayette Grill, NYC from 1/9-2/10.

Amy Kosh had a solo show, Landscape Allegories, at Fuzziwhigs in Nyack, NY from 2/16-3/20. Images by Amy Kosh and Ann Ginsburgh Hofkin were selected for … and sweeps me away, National Members Exhibition at A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn from 3/3-28.

Susan Kuhlman had one image in Black & White, a members’ show at East End Arts Council Gallery, Riverhead, NY from 1/15-2/26.

Alyce Mayo and Sheila Smith had work in the Mixed Media Art Exhibit with the Gramercy Neighborhood Association (GNA), at the National Arts Club, NYC from 2/23-26.

On 3/19, Trish Mayo had two photographs in Harlem: Our Shared Global Culture, which was part of the 1st Annual Harlem Arts Alliance International Arts Event. Trish was in a two-person show, A Million and One Thanks, at Local Project in Long Island City from 2/6-21, and she also had work in Illuminating Nature, at Wave Hill House, the Bronx, from 11/27-2/28.

Debbie Miracolo had work in The Sweet Escape, at the Morean Arts Center in St. Petersburg, FL from 1/15-3/13.

A three-woman show, including a retrospective of the work of Roz Rosenblum, titled Visual Motifs, and fourteen photographs by Pat Yancovitz, Rust, Paint, Scissors, was at Art Way Gallery at the Princeton Alliance Church, Plainsboro, NJ from 1/16-2/21.

Photographs by Deborah Terry were in two exhibitions aimed at raising awareness and funds for relief efforts in African nations. Stories, which included documentary photography of refugees and multimedia presentations, was at Honfleur Gallery, Washington, DC from 1/22-2/26, and Migrations – Nomads With No Cause/Refugees With No Tomorrow, a solo show focused on the conflict in Darfur, was at the Gallery at Vivid Solutions, Washington, DC from 1/22-2/22. Proceeds from the exhibits went to support the International Lifeline Fund, a non-profit international relief and development organization dedicated to water and sanitation issues, micro-enterprise and fuel-efficient technologies. Janice Wood Wetzel had work in Central Park Exhibit, at the West Side Arts Coalition, NYC from 1/20-2/7.

Janice Wood Wetzel and Deena Weintraub were the co-curators for Trash, at the West Side Arts Coalition, NYC from 3/3-21. This year’s PWP Student Awards exhibition showed black and white images on the theme of Water. The exhibition was at the Ernest Rubenstein Gallery at the Educational Alliance, NYC from 3/21-4/1. PWP members donated photographs and services for a silent auction at the reception.

Other News

Ruth Gitto is conducting one-day photography workshops from April through October. Her Foto Safaris, using New York City as subject matter, will take place once a week, and will be limited to five participants per Safari. Laurie Klein offered three workshops at her home studio during February and March.

Birgit Pohl recently sold two Polaroid transfers to a collector in Westchester.

On 4/15, Roz Rosenblum will be the judge for a competition at the Color Photographers Club of Staten Island. Roz judged two camera competitions in March. On 3/10 she was at the Wantagh L.I. Camera Club in Wantagh, NY, and on 3/22 she was at the Ocean County Camera Club in Lakewood, NJ. Roz also judged three contests in February: the Great Neck Camera Club, the Wantagh Camera Club, and the Gateway Photographers of Staten Island.

Daryl-Ann Saunders was selected to participate in a new Artist-in-Residency program launched by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC), that provides work space for Brooklyn artists at select senior centers in partnership with the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and the New York City Department for the Aging. Also, please note that Daryl-Ann created a photo studio that PWP members can rent for their own 4-6 hour photo sessions at a modest fee. Brick-walled, the studio is 13′ x 25′, with an adjacent bathroom/makeup area, and it’s located twenty minutes from Manhattan in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Contact Daryl-Ann at das@DASaunders.com

Publications

Monica Barnes edits Andean Past, an academic journal dedicated to the archaeology and ethno-history of western South America, which is published by Cornell University. Volume 9 is now available, and can be purchased at: http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/latinamerica/publications/journals.asp

A photo by Ann Brandeis is included in Best of Photography 2009, which was released by Serbin Productions in December.

An article by Elisa Decker, in which she reviews an exhibition by Joseph Stashkevetch, was published in the January 2010 issue of Art in America (see p. 116).

A two-page spread about Marilyn Fish-Glynn is featured in 100 New York Photographers, by Cynthia Dantzic, recently published by Schiffer. Marilyn was honored by the invitation to participate in this book, which includes many iconic figures, spanning over fifty years of work.

Alyce Mayo also has photographs in the book, which includes a 1937 photograph by Rebecca Lepkoff. On 12/18, Marilyn and Alyce participated in a book-signing party at Soho Photo Gallery. Several former PWP members/speakers such as Arlene Gottfried, Cynthia Matthews, Erika Stone, Dee Ann McCarthy and Rebecca Lepkoff were present, along with the book’s author. The book was displayed in the window of Rizzoli Bookstore and can be purchased at the Museum of Modern Art.

In January, National Wildlife Magazine announced that Holly Gordon won first place in the global warming category of their annual photography competition. An article in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle on 2/4 features the solo show of Theresa King at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn.

A group photo by Andy Mars, which includes Dr. Ruth Wertheimer, is in the January/February issue of Fido Friendly magazine.

Tequila Minsky has been traveling to and photographing in Haiti for a number of years, resulting in various exhibitions, publications and more. She was in Haiti when the earthquake happened, and her astute, compassionate photos appeared on The New York Times‘ online edition on 1/12, and published in the regular paper on 1/13. A Polaroid transfer image by Daryl-Ann Saunders won the most votes in a field of eighty-five submissions in an international contest, the AlternativePhotography.com Calendar Competition 2010. Also, Daryl-Ann photographed author Kara Newman for the inside flap of her new book about cocktails, Spice and Ice, which was released by Chronicle Books in November.

The finalists (called “nominees€) and winners for the 4th International Black and White Spider Awards were announced on 1/24. Mayda Rumberg and Jackie Weisberg were chosen as nominees, and it’s the fifth straight year that Jackie has been either a finalist or received honorable mention awards. Thousands of images were received from over sixty countries and the nominated photographers were selected by a Who’s Who judging panel from the international photography community, including Magnum Photos, Sotheby’s, Tate Gallery, and the Leica Photo Gallery.
